From the Thai language it's vaguely translated as the "opening of the heart." In English that might be translated as compassion. A fisherman curses the sea, "I never want to see the ocean again." Over and over for 10 days we've watched and listened and ached with the news. Nature turned on them, unexpectedly, violently, relentlessly. No discrimination. No conscious "choices." Anything was swept away. Very little seems to be being "returned" - with, perhaps, the only exception - that of the power and will and strength of the human spirit. That, it seems to me, has always been/will always be the tendril the binds us all; and, it is to that Spirit to which I give thanks, to which I give Honor and to which I dedicate this small piece.

One can be numbed into Silence. Each will make their own choice in this. I have made mine.

An Opening of the Heart --- continued
Nine Months Later - October, 2005

As Life would have it, I made a post in reply to a request for a new name for an organization. The name of the person who made the request was Rick Cameron - rick@electriclamb.org. Soon thereafter, Rick and I began communicating on a fairly regular basis. I learned more about ELM, Rick, the issues, the problems, the successes, the needs and the prospects.

This post will not be an extended narrative. When you access ELM's site - http://electriclamb.org - that is the information that you need. There is no reason for me to paraphrase what is so elegantly and urgently presented there.

There is so much to be done - yesterday, today, tomorrow. Once you've looked and read and thought -- consider what it is that you can do...and do it.

Gone to the Bayou

While busying myself with quiet Sunday morning activities and listening to the local National Public Radio (NPR) station, yet, again, there was comment about Katrina. My thoughts went to several weeks spent as guests of Marty and Deb along a particular bayou in Chauvin, LA - just down the road from Houma and perilously close to New Orleans. There was immediate and visceral sensememory - damp air, buzzing insects, pungent aromas, fresh crab (thanks to Marvin and Merle), sumptuous boils, watching "flippin' fish" jag, arch and leave a trail of sparkling, sepia water before landing and scuddering way, the sound of a genuine Cajun drawl greeting, "Hey Babe, how you doin'?" - concrete "stuff" - not gross globs of newsspeak, the preponderance of pictures.

"Gone to the Bayou" is inscribed on a weathered paddle given as a gift before leaving. That paddle always brings to mind those particular people and that particular place and time. "Gone to the bayou," today, felt like a melancholy refrain echoing inside a rusty tin can.

They weren't hit too bad. "The eye passed 25 miles east, turned at the last minute," said Deb. "One hundred mile an hour winds; but, the bayou didn't rise...by the hand of God." Indeed. Amen.
